Freelance Friday – Oddest Combination of Stories on Your Desk at One Time?

I spent two years of my life updating the same two software manuals. Each morning, I came into my job as a technical writer, checked the change management system to see what new features were being developed, and set to work documenting them. Let’s just be polite and say that I was bored to tears.

As a freelancer, I have never had that problem. I like to keep learning about new topics and I get bored quickly, so I try to keep a wide variety of clients at any time so I am rarely writing about the same type of topics. But sometimes, I end up with some very unique combinations of projects at the same time. Last week, I was working on an article on credit counseling in Florida, a chicken sauce, fleet management software, and a profile of a lawyer. And that combination wasn’t even that rare.

Here are a few of the more unique combinations of stories that I have open on my computer at the same time:

  • How to handle a tornado or shooting in a fast food restaurant, a feature story on a local dog rescuer dying of cancer, and a press release about a telecommunications company.
  • How to prevent aids, a profile of a teenager dying of cancer, how to run a host a webinar for your small business, and 5 Fun Things to Do With Your Toddler after nap
  • A personal essay on being thrown up on by my children, how to protect the data in your small business, preventing head injuries during youth sports, and a profile on a local church supper.

What are some interesting combinations of stories that you have been working on at the same time?
